Fiber optic signal conditioners for temperature monitoring can be used for measurement on patients and materials in MRI. Since the field strengths can be some tesla high, metallic sensors cause errors in graphic displaying a measurement. For special cancer treatment sensors with a diameter of 0,5 mm are available. These can be used minimal invasive for monitoring of tissue temperature. Healthy tissue should not be heated above 40° Celsius, while carcinomas tissue will denature by higher temperatures.
Another field of application of this measurement technique is laser therapy. Through an endoscope laser energy is coupled and the temperature will be measured via a fiber optic probe at the location of therapy.
